Definitions are arbitrary and open to interpretation. What one person calls poetry may be prose or ordinary writing to another.
Ruth Nott lays no claim to expertise in poetry. What she writes comes from the heart or a lively imagination, written quickly or with lengthy thought and intense examination. " It just comes. It is what it is."
As the title of this book indicates, most of what Ruth has written during the past year has been in response to weekly or daily poetry prompts provided by the good folks and readers of Robert Lee Brewer’s Poetic Asides Blog on the web at www.writersdigest.com.
Her poems of 2013 are presented here as the year progressed, showing the date and the prompt; however, very few were written on the date of the prompt, some being written months later when the mood struck her to sit down and write again. Those poems which have no prompt indicated are unprompted except by a nudge from her muse. Ruth states "As I age, time speeds by and thoughts slow to a crawl. Bear with me and I hope you enjoy the poems of 2013."
Prompt Response eBook Ruth Nott
Knowing the author for years and her wit towards poetry writing, my expectations were met in this book. An exquisite, carefully-carved book filled with poems on different prompts that were created by Robert Lee Brewer. I appreciate Nott for showing her passion for her two pets on the front cover as well as her passion to write poetry on the back cover. The author specifically states “I lay no claim to expertise in poetry.” Honesty is best quality in writing and though she asserts to be nonprofessional, the poems inside of her book exemplify professionalism. Poems of different flavors, styles, and imagery are contained inside. She begins the book with a solid definition of poetry from the Webster dictionary. It’s vital to understand if a piece of writing qualifies as a poem. My book is autographed by the author and I laughed, and then smiled at her remarks. We both tease a lot about StarBucks and I definitely owe her a Vente Caramel Macchiato. Inside of Prompt Response, a lot of poems laid a heavy significance in my life. They are English Bulldog, That Boy, Road Trip, and Faltering Faith.
Ruth dedicates a page in her book for her two pets, Sasha and Bucky, and writes about their greatness in English Bulldog. As I kept reading the poem over and over, I understood that bulldogs have a sympathetic, loving side to them as well. That Boy was very funny to me and if I had written the poem, I would have called it That Girl. Middle school crushes are never forgotten! Road Trip reminds me a lot of my poem, Rendezvous, because both poems talk about having a nice road trip with delicate music playing. I closed my eyes and let the images pervade in my mind upon reading this poem.
Faltering Faith was my number one poem out of the whole book. As Christians, we ponder about our sufferings and wonder why God allows so many mishaps. Our faith does falter and constantly, we have to be reminded of His grace, mercy, and salvation. All in all, this book was a pleasure for me to read and I know that other readers will feel the same way.
I recommend this book to all poets, writers, adventurous readers, and those who want to read something amusing and heart-felt. I can attest that you will enjoy every page from beginning to end. Grab a couple of tissues and a box of popcorn! Splendid work and a crafted masterpiece of poetry
